Well, I did it…and I survived! I have used coupons before but as my friend told me, I was just using the “junior method.” It was time for me to step it up a notch. And to be honest, I still feel like I’m a puppy playing with the big dogs but day by day, I’m getting a little bit more used to this coupon thing.
Last week I armed myself with my brand new CaseIt binder. I found the best inserts and I loaded it with the best coupons that I had been printing for a couple of weeks. Then this weekend, my friend scooped up the big city paper for me before it was sold out. I thought, no way will it be sold out. I’ll be able to walk into any grocery store in the afternoon and pick one up. HA!! Nope. Yes, I am glad that she was thinking of me and bought an extra!
I’ve been planning my first shopping trip for a few days. I know that for the more experienced shopper it doesn’t take days but I’m a very organized, and yes even anal, person so right now I plan for a bit longer than most. I wanted it to go smoothly…I wanted to have everything organized to the tee. I had my fliers and coupons all set and ready to go.
Other than breaking my cardinal rule…DO NOT BRING YOUR CHILDREN WITH! It went perfectly! I’m a stay-at-home, homeschooling mother of 4 and there’s only so many hours in the day so sometimes I just have to bring my kids with on a shopping trip. Actually, I usually bring them shopping and it’s not a big deal. But on my first big ‘couponing’ trip when I’m trying to make sure that all my coupons are matching up and I’m trying to locate the right items, etc., it’d just be better to go when I’m by myself.
Anyway, I have found that Walgreens has been great with my coupons! I didn’t walk out today with a completely free purchase but I thought my savings were pretty great! I needed almost everything on my list…and if I didn’t need it immediately, I will USE all of it in the near future. I don’t like to buy things if I’m not going to use it. Otherwise, that’s just defeating the purpose of saving money. Unless of coarse it is free and then you can give it away to charity. Side note: Couponing for Community is coming up in May!
