That Maytag repair man…wow does he come with the best tips! Every time he comes I learn so much! I always wonder why they don’t tell you these things BEFORE so that your appliances don’t break?!
I have the maintenance plans on my dishwasher, and the washer and dryer. With those items, the plan pays for itself if you use it. Every year, I just schedule a maintenance check, the guy comes out, checks them to make sure they’re in good working order, cleans them up a bit and we’re good to go. Or if there’s anything wrong, I can call and they’ll come out and fix them for free. FREE is good when otherwise I’d be paying $100s!
I have the Maytag 4.7 cu. Ft. Top-Loader Washer and the Bravos XL High-Efficiency Electric Dryer . These guys are absolutely amazing! Best washer and dryer ever!! I can do like 3 loads at a time in these puppies! It’s amazing! I’ve been using high efficiency detergent and fabric softener…been following the guidelines on how much to use, etc. Well I’ve been getting an error code every once and awhile. So my repair man tells me that it’s because I’m using too much soap!! Even though I’m following directions??!
TIP 1: The directions say to fill to the #3 line for large loads. My repairman said that the most I should fill it to EVER is the #1 line! My machine was getting those error codes because there were too many suds. It is high efficiency and doesn’t require that much soap. Ugh. So I’ve been wasting soap this entire time. Detergent is not cheap!
TIP 2: Next he tells me that my dryer vent had a wax coating on it from the fabric softener (Downy) that I had been using and I should always dilute it before using it. Keep an old bottle fill it half with fabric softener and half with water, mix well and then use the minimum amount in your loads. Again, how much money have I been dumping down the drain on Downy!
On to my dishwasher. I have the portable Maytag Jetclean Plus. It works great! We’ve never had any problems with it. I don’t have enough room in my kitchen to have one in the counter so to be able to have a portable one that we can hook up is awesome! I love it!!
The problem that we did have was not with the dishwasher itself, it was with the detergent we were using. Last year I had to call the repairman because the dishwasher stopped pumping out the water. I’m so glad we had the maintenance agreement!
TIP 3: We had been using the Cascade action pacs that are coated in plastic. The plastic was not properly dissolving and was not only getting stuck throughout the dishwasher but was wrapped up in and around everywhere. The repairman had to work for a long time digging plastic out. He said that he found that in a lot in dishwashers because of those action pacs. So what they were recommending was definitely NOT to use anything wrapped in plastic but to use powder detergent or the solid powder cubes. What I use now is the Finish Powerball Tablets.
I also mentioned how my dishes never seemed to get dry.
TIP 4: He said the best thing to do was one to make sure to start with HOT water. And then two, after the wash cycle is done, to open the door and let all of the steam out. Then close the door and let the dry cycle complete. If you’re not using the heated dry cycle, then just leave your door open. Simple enough!
Oh and btw, I made sure to write Cascade a very stern email letting them know how disappointed I was in their product! They did write me back with a coupon for a free product. I didn’t choose to get any more action pacs with my coupon.
