It works in a number of ways too. For example, watching movies in one language while reading the subtitles in your own will help with pronunciation – alternatively, listening in your own language, while reading the subtitles in another is great for quick translation. Closed captioning also works as it allows you to see programs in other languages and see and hear the words at the same time.

Soap operas are often even better to watch than movies because in a lot of cases they are so overacted you can tell the emotion or feeling with the sound off – this makes them ideal for learning from.

Volunteer

Why not volunteer at a language teaching school – if you have a basis of any sort it can be a great way to improve, while also allowing you to do some good for your community too. It allows you more time speaking the language and means you’re more likely to improve.

Online Courses

There are a number of low cost and even free online courses which are quite good and can be a great way to learn a new language. BBC Languages has a range of free online courses and covers a wide range of languages. Conversation Buddy

Finding someone who’s fluent in the language and having a chat with them in that language is generally the best way to learn a language. There are lots of ESL classes throughout the world and many of the people who attend will help you learn their language if you help them learn yours. This can be a great way to get free help by giving some free help and save them on having to find a language teacher. Even though it may be initially awkward, you’ll both get a good experience and it can be a great way to learn.
